Children often learn almost everything by watching them at home. Children will reflect exactly what the adults in the household do, including what words to speak, how to speak, how to brush their teeth, eat, and show respect to adults. Similarly, a recent study found that problems at home and bad experiences that children face can have a detrimental effect on their mental health as they grow older.
Depression at a young age can have a long-term impact as children grow older. The University of Auckland published the findings of the study in the journal Child Abuse and Neglect. The study examined the experiences of 2,888 individuals who participated in the 2019 New Zealand Domestic Violence Survey.
The researchers researched eight types of problems that affect children. The study looked at physical, sexual and psychological harassment, including domestic violence and violence, drug abuse, psychological trauma, and vulnerability to divorced family members.
Janet Fanslow, an associate professor at the School of Population Health, Medicine and Health Sciences, says: It puts a lot of pressure on our families, our health system and our economy. "
Forty-five percent of those surveyed said they had not experienced any negative experiences in their childhood. Of those remaining, those who experienced four or more negative experiences were more likely to develop mental health problems in the future, the study found.
Not only that but the more negative things boys see or experience at a young age, the more likely it is that their mental health will be affected in the future. It can cause severe depression, extreme anger, inability to get along with anyone, being constantly tense, and a changing mood.
Although it is not always possible to protect a child from adverse events, it is one of the duties of a parent to raise a child in a safe and healthy environment as much as possible.
